Greenlight is excited to host Paul Mendez for his extraordinary debut novel, Rainbow Milk, an essential and revelatory coming-of-age narrative from a thrilling new voice. Nineteen-year-old Jesse is a bright and devout Jehovah’s Witness struggling under a repressive religious community to keep his queer desire a secret. As Jesse reckons with race, class, sexuality and spirituality in his search for self-discovery, freedom, and the stability of a chosen family, Rainbow Milk tells the story of (in Mendez’s words) “the new black body in the old white promised land, floundering, unloved, yet able to summon the strength to survive” through a fierce reclamation of the past. Mendez is a writer with an utterly fresh and searing voice, who has written a much-needed entry into the literary canon. Mendez is joined in conversation by Robert Jones, Jr., creator of the social justice social media community Son of Baldwin and author of the highly acclaimed debut novel The Prophets.
